With this challenge I wanted to get something out of it. Not just getting pictures done and everything, but to learn something new every piece. Whether through successful execution or not, you know, just learning...that's enough.
So this time around the big thing was an involved background. I mean, the character is in an environment, not floating in white space, not placed in from of a flat background, but actually somewhere...
The other thing was real strong directional lighting...which didn't really get successfully executed I don't think...I mean...like the leg shadows and stuff? I dunno...I should look for reference before I go on artistic excursions like this. It's dangerous.
I guess I feel successful with this piece. I learned a lot. Got a little bit more finished painting under my extremely new digital painting belt. I think I like the flesh tones...in some spots...I like the boxes...they seem to be real...and have weight and mass and everything.
...shadows are something I'd like to learn to do so much better...and I look forward a bit to trying out "dark" I hope to get some interesting colored shadow work in that one...maybe some green shadows...like something tinted and whatnot...I should definitely get some reference, at least color, for that. One thing that I did find in this also is that I like cardboard...and underwear...I apologize though, that's some badly drawn underwear...generic panties...sucks, I know. Better luck next time.
As well as these serious challenge pieces like this, I'd like to get some more light hearted pieces, maybe some with lines? Because I kind of miss lines...they really let you relax. I need to try some traditional painting as well, just to get a better understanding of the digital...
I hope to have more on the way before school begins again. Blech.
Thank you everybody. Especially you few that continue to comment on these...perhaps one day I'll make it worth your while.
Critiques wanted.
If you've got some reference ideas that'd be great, or even just links to artists that really know how to use shadows well, I'd appreciate it, it's something that I'd really like to improve on, and observation is a great way to do so...
edit. Forgotten something already. Some parts are kinda roughed up here...and I realize that isn't the style of many artists here on DA...everything I see is so sleek and clean and straight. So refined. I happen to like the gestural painting. So please live with it. Honestly, who likes painting individual toes? They're there...and you can tell they're there, but I'm not comfortable enough to do some real detailed painting.
i never though that you can paint something really strong like this one ! and of course, i can give you a little url for to help you very much : [link] < this tutorial is very complet because the artist is a very popular person from commercial stuff. in this tutorial have many information about the light and especially explaint how this work really !
hope i give you a very good url

I really like it!! ^^ I love every stroke in her hair! i think I love her hair the most in this pic. that and the little fairy she has in her hand. I do think the shadows are a bit off like the one under her legs, or the one in the one in the corner. But i think the shadow behind her back is looking great! I'm sorrie, I don't know any links to tutorials or artist that are good with these kinds of things... I'll tell you when i come across one~! ^^ Anyways, sorrie for the long comment... keep up the awesome work~!
I seriously wish I would've been able to see you finish the rest of this picture, it's truly amazing. I love how the lightsource is in the middle of the picture, you pulled this off quite well. :3 The flesh tones are beautifully done. I like the peachy/pinkish hues.
The shading on the hair is just marvelous. Awing, even. You showed the light hitting only the front of her head perfectly, I like the sudden change in shade.
You're completely right, the boxes do have a realistic feel, they look like they have mass, the only thing getting to me is why the one box behind underwear girl has an X of maskng tape on it; it looks cool and everything, but I don't see why someone would tape a box like that. :3
Shadow wise, on the walls, ground, really well done. I like how you took in to account where her leg is in the picture. At first I thought the hand's shadow would be too big, but it looks right in proportion to everything else. I just can't really tell how close everything is. :3
The reeeeeally tall box in the corner, I feel it should get darker, the side we see, as it nears the wall. It looks like it's the same color as the second lightest tone on that box, and I dunno, I guess that could happen, but I don't see it that way. It could just be me. :3
Terrifically executed painting. . You really want to return to lines? This is working out so well for you. :3

critique...critique...uhm..well three things I noticed, buddy...
First, her left leg, it seems to have the same width from hip to knee, which sorta makes it a...column? hmm... maybe if you made her left leg a little thinner towards the knee...you know?
Second thing is, her right hand...it seems unnatural how she rests her weight on it.
You couldn't hold your weight with your hand like that. You would either have to spread your fingers out with your hand about 90° towards the ground (sorry, makes little sense - hope you understand what I'm tryin' to say) or by putting it flat on the ground. Also, her right arm seems a little..bend, while you'd have it straight when you rest your weight on it (at least that's what I think)..some people can even bend their arm to a point that's further than 180°...well most people can, but not drastically.
Last thing is...which I always forget as well,
with her butt being on the ground, it would change its shape and stick out to the sides as it's pressed on the ground. Like a balloon, y'know? Bad comparison, but works for me.
Other than that...man, that might be your best cging so far. No sheet.
It certainly surpasses my cging skills and my understanding of room and light/shadow by far.
The parcels came out REAL well.
Oh and about the shadows, a thing you might wanna think of is like, the closer the object that casts the shadow is to the wall/ground the shadow hits, the sharper the outlines of the shadow are - and the further it's away, the blurrier and less deep it gets. So it's dark and sharply defined and then blurry and..well that's where the reflections kick in etc, I don't need to tell you cause you obviously know
Overall man, be proud of yourself.
You did a great job there.

I hope I told you something you didn't already know / didn't try to correct something that wasn't wrong.
the colors are great, i think you nailed those. and i almost always prefer the roughs over the finished result, tt's great to see the searching lines and sketchy qualities of things. the problem i am seeing is that she doesn't look like she's on the same plane as her environment. according to her perspective she's leaning further towards us than the boxes are so it feels like she should be falling off her environment. perhaps the leg closest to us should be moved towards us (the foot) and the hips to be positioned at the proper angle. that's about it. the coloring and lighting seems to be just dandy.
I know what you mean by going on artistic excursions can be dangerous.
Personally, I like your lighting/shading style, and don't really have anything to add to that subject that hasn't already been said.
I think your color choices work well, and your skin tones feel natural.
That tipped box at the top right and the box that covers the right edge creates a deceptive perspective. It almost feels like that side of the room is tipping inwards.
It looks good, and I think you accomplished your goals. Especially if you feel like you've learned something. Great painting.
